Vigo, December 4, 2020 – Maputo (Mozambique) has hosted the presentation of the “Professional Capacity Building Programme for the Marine Fishing Sector in Mozambique”, an initiative promoted by the Public-Private Partnership for Development (PPPD), of which the New Pescanova Group and Pescamar are members, in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the Consellería do Mar of the Xunta de Galicia and the Matola de Pescas School of Mozambique. This is the first AECID PPPD in Africa.
This training programme aims to improve the employability of young people in the country by adapting the training offer provided by the Escola de Pesca in Matola (Mozambique) to the needs of the fishing industry and to the requirements of the National Authority for Professional Education in Mozambique (ANEP) and the international regulations imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
This is a strategic project for Pescamar, subsidiary of the Nueva Pescanova Group in the country, as it will represent an significant training improvement for professionals in the marine fishing sector, contributing to enriching the generational relay plan for its fleet crews in Mozambique. Pescamar will in fact complement the training of the students of the Fishing School by offering an internship programme, required to obtain the qualification within the new professional training system, also providing the possibility of employment to students who successfully complete the training and demonstrate strong performance, as it did for the young people trained during the 2018-2020 editions. Over the past three years, more than 30 students have joined the Nueva Pescanova Group’s Mozambican subsidiary.
Within the framework of the agreement, the Escola de Pesca de Matola will be supported by the Instituto Politécnico Marítimo-Pesqueiro do Atlántico (Xunta de Galicia), in order to develop actions to train the teaching staff, as well as to design and implement regulated and short term courses. Likewise, it will receive the necessary equipment and material to carry out this training and a permanent collaboration space will be established between the private marine fishing sector and the training entities to adapt the teaching content to the needs of the sector.
The presentation was attended by the General Director of Nueva Pescanova Group’s Fishing Division, Lucas Lorenzo; Pescamar general director Felisberto Manuel; the Minister of Sea, Interior Waters and Fisheries of Mozambique Augusta Maíta; Spain’s ambassador to Mozambique Alberto Cerezo and the Xunta de Galicia’s Regional Councillor in charge of the Sea Rosa Quintana.
