Vigo, 7th February 2022 – In line with its commitment to the sustainable management of resources, the Nueva Pescanova Group is making progress towards an energy transition by incorporating two new solar farms for self-consumption at its factories in Valencia.
The factory located in Paterna, which processes cod, has 543 solar panels with a power output of 242 kWp, representing an estimated annual energy production of 362,968 kWh. The factory in Catarroja, which specialises in the processing of vannamei shrimps and cephalopods, such as cuttlefish and squid, among others, has 444 solar modules with an output of 200 kWp and an annual energy output of 300,693 kWh. Both will generate over 660,000 kWh of energy per year, equivalent to the average electricity consumption of around 180 homes in Spain. In addition, these new solar plants, launched in collaboration with EiDF, will have a positive impact on air quality and will reduce the carbon footprint, avoiding CO2 emissions similar to what would be produced by planting more than 16,500 trees.
In 2019, the Company initiated its investment in solar energy with the installation of two farms at its production facilities in Lüderitz and Walvis Bay (Namibia) and, in 2020, at the industrial centres in Chapela and Porriño (Pontevedra), Arteixo (A Coruña), at the turbot production plant in Xove (Lugo) and at the Pescanova Biomarine Center in O Grove (Pontevedra). The addition of the industrial centres in Valencia brings the total number of photovoltaic solar plants to nine. This represents more than half of the Nueva Pescanova Group’s factories worldwide, with a total of 42,000 square metres of photovoltaic modules, which will generate energy for self-consumption totalling more than 12,400,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 3,330 homes in Spain. Nueva Pescanova thus contributes to reducing the volume of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and reducing its carbon footprint, similar to what would be generated by planting more than 227,000 trees.
In the words of Ignacio González, CEO of the Nueva Pescanova Group: “Sustainable performance guides each and every one of the activities in our value chain. The transition to renewable energy sources is a significant step forward in our commitment to keep working for the environment and the sustainable management of natural resources. Today, over 50% of our factories have clean energy sources, but our objective is to work towards reaching 100%”.
